First grade math looks simple and is not. The year introduces the idea that a digit's position determines its value — that 47 is four tens and seven ones rather than a four and a seven. A child who does not genuinely absorb that will meet the same wall repeatedly: at regrouping, at multi-digit multiplication, at decimals.

Where first graders most often get stuck

The most common first-grade sticking point is counting on fingers for every fact, well into the year. It is not a crisis, but it indicates facts are not becoming automatic, and automaticity matters because facts occupy working memory that later procedures need.

The second, and more consequential, is a child who can read and write two-digit numbers but cannot explain what the first digit means. That gap is easy to miss because the surface performance looks fine.

FAQ

Questions about 1st grade math tutoring

Is finger counting a problem?

Not in itself — it is a reasonable strategy children should outgrow. If it is still needed for every basic fact late in first grade, facts are not becoming automatic, and that will slow everything built on them.

How do I help with math facts at home?

Short and frequent beats long and occasional. Five minutes of a card game or dice game several times a week is more effective than a twenty-minute worksheet, and considerably more likely to actually happen.

My child gets the right answers but cannot explain how. Does that matter?

Yes, eventually. A child who can compute without understanding has a procedure with no anchor, and procedures without anchors fail when the problems get more complex. It is much easier to build the understanding now.

Is first grade too early for math tutoring?

Not if there is a specific gap — particularly in place value or number sense. It is too early if the concern is general acceleration, and we will say so.
