What does 3rd grade tutoring cover?

Third grade tutoring covers multiplication and division facts and concepts, fractions as numbers, multi-step word problems, reading comprehension in informational text, multisyllabic decoding, and writing organized multi-paragraph pieces.

Third grade is the year the demands change character. Reading stops being taught and starts being assumed — every subject now requires it. Simultaneously, math introduces multiplication, division and fractions, the first mathematics that seriously punishes memorization without understanding.

A student arriving in third grade with an unresolved reading gap may encounter it in science, social studies and math word problems at once. This is one reason third grade produces so many first-time tutoring inquiries.

Reading at this stage

Decoding multisyllabic words, reading with fluency and expression, and comprehension that increasingly requires inference rather than recall. Informational text becomes central, and it has structures that must be taught — cause and effect, compare and contrast, sequence.

Many children who read fiction comfortably struggle here, because narrative has a shape they absorbed from years of stories and nonfiction does not. It is a teachable gap and a commonly missed one.

Math at this stage

Multiplication and division as concepts and then as automatic facts. Fractions as numbers on a number line rather than as pictures of pizza. Area and perimeter, multi-step word problems, rounding.

One of the more consequential third-grade math difficulties is memorizing multiplication facts without understanding what multiplication is. That student may compute 6 × 7 correctly and still not recognize when a word problem calls for it — and can meet a wall at fractions, where the operations depend more on understanding than on recall.

Writing at this stage

Multi-paragraph pieces with a beginning, middle and end. Opinion writing with reasons, informational writing with facts, narrative with sequence. Revision becomes a real expectation rather than a recopy, and paragraph organization matters more than sentence-level correctness.

Signs a student at this level may need support

Reads accurately but cannot answer inference questions
Struggles noticeably with nonfiction and textbook material
Avoids longer words or skips them entirely
Has not made multiplication facts automatic by late in the year
Can compute but cannot choose the right operation for a word problem
Finds fractions confusing beyond simple halves and quarters
Writes paragraphs with no discernible organization
Homework routinely takes far longer than about thirty minutes

A single item on this list is rarely meaningful. Several of them, persisting past a term, are worth acting on.

How online sessions work at this age

Third graders are well suited to online sessions and often enjoy the format. Sessions typically run longer teaching blocks than in earlier grades, with independent work the educator observes in real time.

Word problems are worked on the shared whiteboard with the child restating the problem in their own words before writing any numbers — which usually exposes immediately whether the difficulty is mathematical or linguistic.

Questions parents ask

Why is third grade such a common year for tutoring?

Because two things happen at once: reading stops being explicitly taught and starts being required everywhere, and math introduces multiplication, division and fractions. A child with a small existing gap in either subject now feels it constantly.

My child knows their times tables but struggles with word problems. Why?

Because those are separate skills. Knowing 6 × 7 is recall; recognizing that a situation calls for multiplication is comprehension and reasoning. Sometimes the obstacle is reading rather than math at all — which an early skills review helps distinguish.

How important are multiplication facts really?

They matter, because recall frees working memory that later procedures need. A student computing each fact from scratch during long division or fraction work has less capacity left for the procedure itself. In our experience, facts built on understood strategies and then practised for speed tend to hold best.

Is it too late if my child still cannot decode well in third grade?

No. Phonics gaps in third grade and beyond are common, and because they are often narrow and specific they can be among the quicker things to address. Instruction is paced faster and uses age-appropriate material — no third grader should be handed kindergarten worksheets.
