Online tutoring by grade level, TK through 5th

What a kindergartner needs and what a fifth grader needs are different problems. Each grade page covers the skills that actually matter at that stage.

What grades does Peak Online Learning tutor?

Peak Online Learning tutors students in transitional kindergarten (TK) through 5th grade. Instruction is one-on-one and delivered live online to families throughout the United States.

We work only in the elementary years, deliberately. These are the years our Founder & Lead Educator taught professionally for more than 13 years, and they are the years where the foundations get poured — decoding, number sense, the writing habit, and the belief that hard things are learnable.

Where the real transitions happen

Elementary difficulty tends to surface at three predictable points. Knowing them helps parents distinguish a normal wobble from a gap worth acting on.

The end of first grade

By this point, decoding should be working. A child still guessing at words from pictures and first letters has a strategy that will hold up for another year and then fail. This is one of the easiest moments to act in a child's entire school career, and among the most commonly missed.

Third grade

School shifts from learning to read to reading to learn, right as multiplication and fractions arrive. A child with an unresolved reading gap now hits it in every subject simultaneously, and a child with shaky number sense meets the first math that punishes memorization without understanding.

Fifth grade

Independence expectations rise sharply in preparation for middle school: multi-day assignments, self-management, reading with real analytical demands. Students who have been quietly propped up by an attentive adult tend to become visible here.

Grade level is not the same as skill level

The most useful thing to understand before choosing a grade page: your child's grade tells us what the curriculum is demanding, not what they can currently do. Those are frequently a year or more apart in either direction, and the gap between them is the actual subject of tutoring.

This is why programs begin with a skills review rather than a grade-level curriculum. A fourth grader with a vowel-team gap may need first-grade phonics content delivered at a fourth grader's pace and dignity — not more fourth-grade reading.
