Online phonics tutoring
Explicit, systematic phonics instruction delivered one-on-one online — for early readers and for older students whose decoding gaps never got closed.
What is phonics tutoring?
Phonics tutoring teaches the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent, explicitly and in a deliberate sequence, so a student can decode unfamiliar words rather than guess at them. For many early and struggling readers it is among the most useful places to focus.
The alternative to phonics is guessing, and guessing has a ceiling. A child who identifies words from the first letter, the picture and the sentence context can appear to read successfully through most of first grade. The strategy collapses somewhere around second or third grade, when pictures disappear, words get longer and context stops being sufficient. Families often describe this as a child who "suddenly" started struggling. Nothing changed suddenly; the guessing strategy simply ran out of road.
The phonics sequence
Order matters. Each stage assumes the one before it is secure, and skipping ahead produces gaps that surface years later.
| Stage | What it covers | Usually |
|---|---|---|
| Letter sounds | Single consonants and short vowels | TK–K |
| Blending | Consonant-vowel-consonant words: cat, sit | K |
| Blends and digraphs | st, bl, sh, ch, th | K–1 |
| Silent-e | cap becomes cape | 1 |
| Vowel teams | ai, ea, oa, ee, oo | 1–2 |
| R-controlled vowels | ar, er, ir, or, ur | 1–2 |
| Multisyllabic strategies | Syllable division, prefixes and suffixes | 2–3 |
When an older student struggles, the gap is frequently in vowel teams or r-controlled vowels — patterns that arrive after most explicit phonics instruction has stopped. Finding and repairing that specific gap can change a fourth grader's reading more than a year of general practice.
Is phonics tutoring only for young children?
No. Phonics gaps are common in third, fourth and fifth graders who compensated successfully in the early grades. Instruction for an older student is paced faster and uses age-appropriate material, but the underlying sequence is much the same — and in our experience these gaps can be among the quicker ones to close.
What matters for an older student is dignity. A ten-year-old working on vowel teams should not be handed kindergarten materials. Sessions use their own reading, their own vocabulary and a brisk pace, because the skill gap is narrow even when it has been consequential.
How phonics works in an online session
- The child sounds out words aloud while the educator listens and corrects immediately
- Digital letter tiles the child moves to build and change words
- Word sorts that make a pattern visible rather than telling the child about it
- Decodable text so new patterns get used in real reading the same session
- Dictation, because spelling a pattern proves it is secure in a way reading it does not
That last point is worth emphasizing. A child can often read a word correctly while having only a partial grasp of its pattern. Asking them to spell it exposes the gap immediately, which is why dictation appears in nearly every phonics session.
