Online math tutoring covers number sense, math facts, the four operations, place value, fractions, measurement and word problems for TK through 5th grade. Early sessions look for the earliest concept that is not secure, because elementary math is cumulative and a gap in second grade often surfaces as a struggle in fourth.

Math is the subject where families most often discover that the problem is older than the symptom. A fifth grader who cannot manage fraction operations frequently has an unstable grasp of division. A fourth grader who fails at long division may not have automatic multiplication facts. A third grader stuck on regrouping may never have understood what the tens place actually means.

Working on the visible grade-level topic while a foundation underneath it is missing tends to produce a student who can follow a procedure on Tuesday and cannot reproduce it on Friday. Finding the actual floor is much of the job.

Understanding first, then procedure, then speed

Elementary math instruction goes wrong most often by inverting this order — teaching the algorithm first and hoping understanding arrives later. It rarely does.

Number sense

An intuitive feel for quantity: that 8 is close to 10, that 47 is between 40 and 50, that multiplying by 10 makes things bigger in a predictable way. Children with strong number sense catch their own errors because unreasonable answers feel wrong. Children without it accept any answer the procedure produces.

Concrete before abstract

New concepts start with something the child can see and move — counters, number lines, fraction strips, arrays — before moving to symbols. This is not a remedial technique; it is how the idea becomes durable.

Math facts as fluency, not memorization

Automatic recall of addition and multiplication facts genuinely matters, because a child computing 7 × 8 from scratch has no attention left for the long-division problem containing it. But facts built on understood strategies stick, and facts drilled without them decay over every summer.

Word problems as a separate skill

Translating language into mathematics is its own competency, and it fails for its own reasons. Sessions work on it directly rather than assuming it follows from computation.

Math anxiety is a real obstacle

By third or fourth grade many struggling students have concluded they are "not a math person." That belief does measurable damage: an anxious child's working memory is partly occupied by the anxiety itself, leaving less available for the problem in front of them. They then perform worse, which confirms the belief.

Breaking that loop is part of the work, and it is done by evidence rather than encouragement. A child who solves something they were certain they could not solve has data. Enough of that data changes the story they tell about themselves.

Usually nothing happened this year. Elementary math is cumulative, and a concept that was never fully secure can be worked around for a long time before the curriculum demands it directly. Multiplication exposes weak addition; fractions expose weak division; long division exposes non-automatic facts. The assessment looks backward from the current struggle to find the actual origin.
Should my child memorize math facts?
Automatic recall genuinely matters, because facts occupy working memory that multi-step problems need. But memorization without understanding is fragile and tends to decay over school breaks. We build facts on strategies the child understands, then work on speed.
My child can do the calculation but fails word problems. Why?
Word problems require translating language into mathematics, which is a separate skill from computing. Sometimes the obstacle is reading comprehension rather than math at all. We work on the translation directly, usually by having the child restate the problem in their own words before any numbers are written.
Can math really be taught over video?
