Elementary skills are not independent. Knowing how they feed one another is most of what separates targeted tutoring from generic help.
- Phonics → reading fluency → comprehension. A child spending all their attention on decoding has none left for meaning. Comprehension work with a decoding gap underneath it is wasted effort.
- Handwriting → writing composition. Until letter formation is automatic, working memory goes to the mechanics rather than the ideas.
- Number sense → math facts → multi-step problems. Memorizing facts without understanding quantity produces a child who computes accurately and cannot tell whether an answer is reasonable.
- Reading comprehension → word problems. More elementary math failure is reading failure than most families expect.
This is why a skills review comes before anything else. Working on the visible symptom while the cause sits one layer down is a common way tutoring wastes a family's money.
