How much homework is normal?

A common guideline is roughly ten minutes per grade level per night — about twenty minutes in second grade, fifty in fifth. If your child routinely takes two or three times that, something is wrong, and it is worth a conversation with the teacher before assuming it is your child. Sometimes the assignment load genuinely is excessive. More often, the work is taking that long because a prerequisite skill is missing.
