4th grade online tutoring
One-on-one online tutoring for fourth graders — multi-digit operations, equivalent fractions, real essays, and reading that demands genuine inference.
What does 4th grade tutoring cover?
Fourth grade tutoring covers multi-digit multiplication and long division, equivalent fractions, fraction addition and subtraction, decimals, inference and vocabulary in complex text, and multi-paragraph essay writing with evidence.
Fourth grade is often where accumulated small gaps become consequential. Long division draws on fluent multiplication facts, secure place value and accurate subtraction with regrouping all at once — so a student weak in any one of the three may find the whole procedure unmanageable, and many conclude they are simply bad at math.
Reading demands rise similarly. Text gets longer, vocabulary gets denser, and comprehension questions increasingly require inference rather than retrieval.
Reading at this stage
Reading longer and more complex text, with vocabulary that is largely learned from reading itself rather than instruction. Inference becomes central: understanding what a text implies but never states. Comparing sources, identifying theme, distinguishing fact from opinion.
The vocabulary gap is worth naming, because it compounds silently. Children who read widely accumulate word knowledge continuously; children who avoid reading fall further behind each year in a way that is invisible until comprehension collapses.
Math at this stage
Multi-digit multiplication and long division, equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, decimal notation, factors and multiples, angles and measurement.
Fractions are the defining fourth-grade difficulty, and the reason is usually conceptual. A child who thinks of a fraction as two separate numbers with a line between them will find equivalence arbitrary and comparison impossible. Rebuilding fractions as quantities on a number line resolves a great deal — and it is worth doing properly, because fifth grade demands fraction operations and middle school assumes them entirely.
Writing at this stage
Multi-paragraph essays with a clear structure, opinion pieces supported by evidence from text, and research writing that requires locating and organizing information. Revision for meaning rather than only for mechanics. Sentence variety and paragraph transitions start to matter.
Signs a student at this level may need support
- Cannot complete long division without step-by-step help
- Multiplication facts are still not automatic
- Treats fractions as two separate numbers
- Reads the words but misses implied meaning
- Vocabulary noticeably limits comprehension
- Writes short, undeveloped paragraphs with little evidence
- Loses or forgets assignments regularly
- Says they are bad at math or bad at reading
A single item on this list is rarely meaningful. Several of them, persisting past a term, are worth acting on.
How online sessions work at this age
Fourth graders work independently in sessions more than younger students, with the educator observing and intervening at the point of difficulty. The shared whiteboard is central for math — long division and fraction work are step-heavy, and seeing each step written reveals exactly where reasoning fails.
Writing sessions use a shared document, with the child drafting live. Watching a fourth grader write is far more diagnostic than reading their finished piece: long pauses, abandoned sentences and repeated restarts identify the blockage precisely.
