Where fourth graders most often get stuck

The characteristic fourth-grade wall is long division, and the useful diagnostic question is which part fails. A child who cannot estimate the quotient has a multiplication problem. One who loses track of the steps has a working-memory or organization problem. One who cannot subtract accurately mid-procedure has a regrouping problem. These need different responses, and treating all of them as division practice is why so much fourth-grade math help fails.

The second is the fraction misconception — treating a fraction as two separate numbers with a line between them. Until that is repaired, equivalence looks arbitrary and comparison is impossible.

How do I help with fractions at home?
Concretely before symbolically. Fraction strips, number lines and cooking measurements make equivalence visible in a way rules do not. If your child cannot show you where three-quarters sits between zero and one, more procedural practice will not help.
Should my child still be using the standard algorithm?

Is it worth going back to third grade material?
