Can math be taught effectively over video?
Yes. A shared digital whiteboard lets the educator watch every step of a child's work as it happens, catching the exact moment reasoning goes wrong rather than only seeing a wrong answer afterward. Virtual manipulatives let a child move fraction strips, base-ten blocks and number lines themselves.
A completed worksheet tells you which answers were wrong. Watching a child work tells you why — and only the second is actionable. In a classroom of twenty-five, a teacher rarely gets to watch one child's process for twenty uninterrupted minutes. In a one-on-one session, that is the default.
What a math session contains
Concrete before abstract
A new or shaky concept starts with something the child can see and move — virtual base-ten blocks for regrouping, fraction strips for equivalence, number lines for comparison — before symbols appear. This is not remediation. It is how an idea becomes durable rather than memorized.
Targeted instruction on the identified gap
Not the grade-level topic, the actual gap. If long division is failing because multiplication facts are not automatic, the session works on facts, and long division improves as a consequence.
Fact fluency in short doses
Five focused, game-based minutes several times a week beats a twenty-minute drill. Facts built on understood strategies — making ten, using known doubles, relating 6 × 7 to 6 × 6 — survive school breaks in a way rote drilling does not.
Word problems worked in language first
The child restates the problem in their own words before any numbers are written. This single habit reliably separates a math difficulty from a reading one, and it is the step most commonly skipped.
Estimation as a habit
Asking "roughly what should this be?" before computing. Children with this habit catch their own errors; children without it accept any output the procedure produces.
Why the format suits math particularly well
- Every step is visible as it is written, not reconstructed afterward

- Work can be saved and revisited, so a child sees their own progress across weeks
- Errors are corrected at the moment they occur, before being rehearsed
- The child writes and manipulates rather than watching an adult demonstrate
What makes an online math session fail
The same thing that makes any online session fail: the child becomes an audience. A session where an adult works problems while the student watches produces very little, regardless of how clear the explanation is. The child must be the one holding the pen.
The second failure mode is homework triage — sessions consumed entirely by tonight's assignment. That guarantees the same struggle tomorrow, because nothing underneath has changed.
What you need at home
A laptop or tablet with camera and microphone, a stable connection, and a quiet spot. Paper and a pencil beside the device are genuinely useful for math specifically — some work is better done by hand and then shown to the camera. Nothing needs to be purchased or installed beyond a browser.
