Why does my child suddenly struggle with math?

Usually nothing happened suddenly. Elementary math is cumulative, and a concept that was never fully secure can be worked around for years until the curriculum demands it directly. Multiplication exposes weak addition, fractions expose weak division, and long division exposes non-automatic facts.

This is why treating the visible grade-level topic is so often ineffective. A fifth grader failing at fraction division may need third-grade division rebuilt. Adding more fraction practice on top of an unstable foundation produces a child who can follow a procedure on Tuesday and cannot reproduce it on Friday.

The common origin points

Place value

Understanding that 47 is four tens and seven ones, not a four and a seven. Nearly every later arithmetic difficulty traces back here — regrouping, multi-digit multiplication, decimals. A child who can read two-digit numbers but cannot explain what the first digit means has a gap that is easy to miss because the surface performance looks fine.

Number sense

An intuitive feel for quantity: that 8 is close to 10, that 47 sits between 40 and 50, that an answer of 400 to a problem about 20 and 20 is obviously wrong. Children with number sense catch their own errors because unreasonable answers feel wrong. Children without it accept whatever the procedure produces.

Non-automatic facts

Addition and multiplication facts that must be computed rather than recalled. This is not about speed for its own sake — facts occupy working memory that multi-step procedures need. A child computing 7 × 8 from scratch in the middle of long division has nothing left for the division.

Procedures without meaning

The most consequential of all. A child taught to borrow, to invert and multiply, to move the decimal, without ever knowing why, holds a set of rules with no anchor. Rules without anchors decay, get confused with each other, and cannot be reconstructed when forgotten.

That last row is worth its own emphasis. A meaningful share of elementary math difficulty is reading difficulty wearing a math costume — the child can perform the operation but cannot work out which operation the sentences are asking for.

Math anxiety makes it worse, measurably

By third or fourth grade many struggling students have concluded they are not a math person. This is not merely a morale issue. An anxious child's working memory is partly consumed by the anxiety, leaving less available for the problem in front of them. They then perform worse, which confirms the belief and deepens the anxiety.

How to find your child's actual starting point

  • Ask them to explain a procedure, not perform it. 'Why does that work?' reveals far more than a correct answer.
  • Ask whether an answer is reasonable before checking it. Absent estimation means absent number sense.
  • Watch for finger counting on basic facts well past the age it should have faded.
  • Have them place a fraction on a number line. If they cannot, fractions were taught as shapes only.
  • Read a word problem aloud to them. If they can then solve it, the obstacle was reading.
