Why can my child do it in class but not at home?

Most often because following a worked example is a fundamentally easier task than producing the method from memory. In class the teacher supplies the structure — which operation, which step comes next, when something has gone wrong. At home that scaffolding is absent, and the child discovers they had been borrowing it rather than building their own. This is extremely common and does not indicate inattention.

Teachers call the classroom version guided practice. It feels like understanding to everyone in the room, including the child, and it is genuinely a necessary stage. The mistake is treating it as the finish line.

The retrieval gap

There is a large difference between recognizing a method when it is in front of you and retrieving it from nothing. Recognition is easy and feels like knowledge. Retrieval is hard and is what homework, tests and next year all require.

A child who nods through a lesson on long division has usually demonstrated recognition. Whether they can retrieve it is a separate question that the lesson did not ask. This is why the homework is often the first honest test of the day, and why it so frequently produces an unpleasant surprise.

Four other explanations worth checking

The prerequisite is missing, not the new method

A child cannot do long division if their multiplication facts are not automatic, no matter how well the division was explained. The lesson looked fine because the teacher supplied the facts. At home, each step stalls on a fact that has to be worked out from scratch, and by the third one the child has lost the thread of the division entirely.

This is the single most common cause in fourth and fifth grade, and it is worth checking before anything else. The pattern is described in helping children learn multiplication facts.

The method was learned as steps, not as an idea

A procedure memorized without meaning is fragile. It survives while the questions look exactly like the examples and collapses the moment one is phrased differently. Children in this position often produce a confidently wrong answer rather than getting stuck, because the steps ran to completion on the wrong material.

Reading, not mathematics

Word problems fail for reading reasons at least as often as for mathematical ones. A child who is a strong calculator and a weak comprehender looks like a mathematics problem from the outside and is not one. Ask them to tell you what the question is about before they attempt it — if they cannot, you have found it.

The home conditions are different

Homework happens at the end of a long day, often at a kitchen table with a tired parent nearby and a sibling in the background. Fatigue and mild anxiety both degrade working memory, which is precisely the resource multi-step arithmetic depends on. Some of the gap is genuinely situational.

How to work out which one you have

  • Ask them to explain what they are doing while they do it. Fluent explanation points to fatigue or anxiety; silence or 'you just do this' points to memorized steps.
  • Ask them to tell you what the word problem is about before calculating. Difficulty here points to reading rather than mathematics.
  • Check whether the arithmetic inside the problem is automatic. Watch for finger-counting or long pauses on facts.
  • Try the same question the next morning. A large improvement points to fatigue rather than to a gap.
  • Give them a question one year below the current work. If that stalls too, the gap is older than this week's topic.

What to do about it

If the prerequisite is missing, go back and secure it, even though it feels like the wrong direction. Nothing built on an unstable fact base will hold, and the time spent repairing it is recovered quickly.

If the method is memorized without meaning, the fix is to rebuild the concept underneath — usually with concrete materials or drawings before symbols. This is slower than reteaching the steps and it is the only version that survives contact with an unfamiliar question.

If it is retrieval, the answer is spaced practice: short, frequent attempts at recalling the method from nothing rather than long sessions of copying it. Ten minutes on three days beats thirty minutes on one.

If it is fatigue, move the homework. It is the cheapest fix available and the least often tried.

What not to do

Reteaching the same lesson with more emphasis rarely helps, because volume was not the problem. Neither does supplying a faster method learned decades ago — a child mid-way through consolidating one procedure cannot absorb a competing one, and being shown a shortcut before the concept is secure tends to produce right answers with nothing behind them.
