Is online elementary tutoring available in Arizona?

Sessions are held over video, one student with one educator. For families outside the Phoenix and Tucson metros — in Flagstaff, Yuma, Sierra Vista, Page or any of the smaller communities where the nearest tutoring center is an hour away — that removes the practical obstacle entirely.
It also removes a summer obstacle that Arizona parents will recognize. Nobody wants to load a seven-year-old into a car at four in the afternoon in July. A session at the kitchen table has no such problem.
Arizona's clock is genuinely different
Arizona does not observe daylight saving time. Most of the state stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, while the Navajo Nation in the north-east does observe it. The practical consequence is that Arizona's relationship to every other state shifts twice a year: for part of the year Arizona matches Pacific time, and for the rest of it Arizona matches Mountain time.

A child who reads aloud haltingly is spending so much effort on the words that little is left over for the meaning — which is exactly why comprehension so often falls apart in fourth grade in children who seemed fine in second.
This is difficult to notice at home once a child has learned to avoid it, and difficult to address in a classroom, because it requires an adult to listen to one child for an uninterrupted stretch and to know what each hesitation signifies. A pause before a long word and a wrong guess from the first letter are different problems with different fixes.

What Arizona families usually bring
Reading that stalled. Frequently the child was described as fine in kindergarten and first grade, and something came apart around the point at which texts got longer. This is nearly always a decoding or fluency issue that was masked while the books were short.

Arizona has no grade called transitional kindergarten. If your child is in a pre-kindergarten program or an early kindergarten placement, describe what you are seeing and we will tell you whether tutoring is appropriate yet — for the youngest children the honest answer is often not yet.
