A season that interrupts everything else

Florida families lose school days and weeks to weather in a way that families in most states do not. A storm week closes schools, disrupts activities and rearranges the household, and anything that depended on being somewhere at a particular time is the first thing to go.

Scheduling across Florida's two time zones

Most of Florida runs on Eastern time. The part of the Panhandle west of the Apalachicola River runs on Central time, an hour behind Tallahassee and Miami — a detail that catches out families in Pensacola and Panama City when comparing notes with friends elsewhere in the state.

Sessions are scheduled in your family's local time, agreed during the complimentary consultation alongside the more important question of when your child can actually concentrate. Florida elementary schools often start early; by five in the afternoon a seven-year-old who has been up since six is not in a good state to learn something new.

Questions from Florida families

My child's school report was disappointing. Should we start tutoring now?

Possibly, and acting while there is school year left is generally better than waiting. Before hiring anyone, it is worth working out what the difficulty actually is, because reading problems with very different causes look identical from the outside. That is exactly what the complimentary consultation is for.

What happens to sessions during a storm week or a school closure?

A session that does not require anyone to travel survives most disruptions, which is much of the practical argument for virtual tutoring in Florida. My third grader is struggling with reading. How urgent is it?

Reading gaps are considerably cheaper to close in first and second grade than in fourth, so earlier is better — but urgency is not the same as panic, and a rushed decision rarely helps. Tutoring can address a skill gap; what no tutor can promise is a particular outcome for an individual child, and any tutor who does is worth walking away from. For anything to do with promotion, placement or school policy, your child's school is the right source.

What ages do you work with?

Transitional kindergarten through 5th grade. Florida does not use the TK label, so if your child is in a pre-kindergarten program or kindergarten, describe where they are rather than which name applies and we will tell you honestly whether tutoring is appropriate at this stage.
