Online elementary tutoring in New York

One-on-one virtual tutoring for elementary students across New York State — in a place where the scarce resource is rarely tutors and almost always time.

Is online tutoring available across New York State?

Yes. Peak Online Learning provides live one-on-one online tutoring for students in transitional kindergarten through 5th grade to families anywhere in New York State, from New York City to the North Country.

New York is an unusual market for tutoring because the shortage is not of tutors. In much of the state, and in the city especially, families have more options than they can evaluate. What they do not have is an unbooked hour on a Tuesday.

That is the specific thing virtual tutoring solves here. There is no travel at either end, which for a family whose evening already contains a commute, a sibling's activity and a bedtime is not a small saving. The session takes the time the session takes and nothing more.

The New York scheduling problem

The whole state is on Eastern time, so the clock is straightforward. The calendar is not.

A large proportion of New York elementary students go from school into some form of after-school program, and come home later than the school day suggests. Adding a tutoring session on top of that at seven in the evening is technically possible and frequently a waste of everyone's time, because a tired nine-year-old cannot learn a new mathematics concept.

It is worth thinking about weekend mornings, which are often the best learning hour of a New York child's week and the one families dismiss first. Session times are agreed during the complimentary consultation in your local time, and the question of when your child is actually available to learn — rather than merely present — is part of that conversation.

Peak Online Learning is an independent virtual tutoring practice. It is not affiliated with the New York State Education Department or with any school or district, and it does not claim alignment with any state's academic standards.

What tutoring covers, TK through 5th grade

Reading is the most common reason families come, and the one where working on the wrong layer wastes the most time. A child who reads slowly may be guessing from context, may be decoding accurately but so laboriously that the meaning drains away, or may be doing both fluently and simply not building a picture of what is happening. Those need three different responses, which is why the early sessions include a skills review rather than a curriculum.

Mathematics difficulties in elementary school are usually traceable to a specific missing idea rather than to general ability. Writing is often held back by handwriting that never became automatic. Homework battles are almost always a symptom of something underneath. There is more on each of these under tutoring by grade and in the subject pages.

New York does not have a grade called transitional kindergarten. If your child is in a pre-kindergarten program or is a young kindergartener, describe where they are rather than which label applies, and we will tell you whether tutoring makes sense yet.

Getting started

Start with a complimentary initial tutoring consultation. Personalized online tutoring programs start at $280 per month, and a starting program typically includes one private virtual tutoring session each week.

In a week that is already full, the honest question is not how much tutoring your child could benefit from but how much will actually survive contact with the calendar. A weekly session that holds is worth more than a heavier plan that collapses in November. Additional frequency and other program options are available where they are justified by the student's needs and goals. Programs directly with Andreea Schwimmer, Founder & Lead Educator, are available at a higher rate and may be subject to availability.

The consultation is also where you should raise doubts. If you are not sure your child needs a tutor at all, that is a good question to bring rather than one to resolve alone. Request a consultation when you are ready.

FAQ

Questions from New York families

Do you work with families outside New York City?
Yes. Tutoring is delivered over video to families anywhere in New York State and throughout the United States. Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, Western New York and the North Country are all the same from a scheduling point of view.
My child already has a busy schedule. Is once a week enough?
For many elementary students it is a reasonable starting point, which is why starting programs typically include one private session each week. Whether it is enough for your child depends on the size of the gap and what happens between sessions. It is discussed honestly during the consultation and revisited as things progress.
Is a weekend morning really better than a weekday evening?
For a lot of elementary students, yes. A child at nine on a Saturday morning has considerably more available attention than the same child at seven on a Wednesday, and attention is the thing that determines whether a session achieves anything. Availability is discussed during the consultation; the point is that the convenient slot and the effective slot are often not the same one.
Would my child be better off with an in-person tutor?
For some children, yes — and we say so on the comparison page rather than pretending otherwise. The youngest students and children who need a lot of physical redirection often do better in person. For most elementary students working on reading or mathematics, a well-run online session is genuinely effective.
Can sessions happen at the weekend?
Scheduling is discussed during the complimentary consultation based on your family's time zone and the available tutoring times. We do not promise a specific slot in advance, because we would rather agree something that will actually hold than something that sounds accommodating.
