Online tutoring by state
Online elementary tutoring in Washington
One-on-one virtual tutoring for elementary students throughout Washington — including the parts of the state where winter and geography make a weekly drive a poor plan.
Is online tutoring available across Washington State?
Yes. Peak Online Learning provides live one-on-one online tutoring for students in transitional kindergarten through 5th grade to families anywhere in Washington State, from Seattle and Spokane to island, mountain and rural communities.
Everything runs over live video, which in Washington solves a set of problems that have nothing to do with education. A ferry timetable, a mountain pass, a valley road in February — none of them affect a session that happens at the kitchen table.
The whole state is on Pacific time, so the clock is simple. Session times are agreed in your local time during the complimentary consultation.
The winter scheduling problem nobody mentions
Washington's winter afternoons are short, and this has a real effect on when children can learn. By December it is dark well before the end of the working day across much of the state, and a child who comes home in the dark is often further into their evening, psychologically, than the clock suggests.
The practical advice is unglamorous: if your child is going to work with a tutor during the Washington winter, protect an earlier slot rather than a later one, even if the later one is more convenient for the adults. A session at four with a child who is still awake is worth two at six with a child who is not.
It is also worth saying that consistency matters more than intensity. A weekly session that survives the whole of a wet winter does more than a burst of activity in October that quietly stops in November. That argument is made properly in how often tutoring should happen.
Who this is for
The scope is transitional kindergarten through 5th grade. Washington does not use the label TK; if your child is in a pre-kindergarten program or a transitional placement, describe the child rather than the grade name and we will tell you whether tutoring is appropriate yet.
Most Washington families arrive with a reading or a mathematics concern. Reading difficulties in the elementary years divide fairly cleanly into problems of decoding, problems of fluency and problems of comprehension, and they need different responses — which is why early sessions include a skills review rather than a syllabus.
Math difficulties are usually traceable to one missing idea rather than to general weakness. Finding which idea is the whole job. The grade pages under tutoring by grade set out what each year expects.
Peak Online Learning is an independent virtual tutoring practice. It is not affiliated with any state education department, school or district, does not claim alignment with any state's academic standards, and does not provide test preparation. Sessions work on the underlying skills — reading, phonics, math and writing — which is both the slower and the more durable approach.
How Washington families begin
Start with a complimentary initial tutoring consultation. Personalized online tutoring programs start at $280 per month, and a starting program typically includes one private virtual tutoring session each week.
If you are starting in the fall, it is worth choosing the slot you would want in January rather than the one that suits a light September evening, because the slot that survives the dark months is the one that does the work. Additional frequency and other program options are available where the student's needs and goals justify them. Programs directly with Andreea Schwimmer, Founder & Lead Educator, are available at a higher rate and may be subject to availability. The program investment page has more.
If tutoring is not the right answer for your child, you will be told that. Request a consultation and describe what is happening.
