Correct computation attached to the wrong question is not an arithmetic problem. It is a translation problem, and it is taught differently.

Why can my child do the math but not the word problems?

Often because a word problem asks for two different skills at once: the child has to work out what is being asked and which operation answers it, and only then perform the arithmetic. A student can be secure on the second half and stuck on the first, which produces the familiar pattern of correct computation attached to the wrong question. It is not the only possible reason, and similar-looking difficulties can have different causes from one child to the next.

This is one of the most specific and most misread situations in elementary math. Parents see wrong answers on a math page and reasonably conclude the math is weak. A child who knows how to divide but not what division is cannot recognize a situation calling for it. Meaning has to precede procedure, and in a crowded curriculum it sometimes does not.

Keyword habits

Many students are taught, formally or informally, that "altogether" means add and "left" means subtract. It works until it does not, and then it can fail quietly — the child applies the wrong operation confidently and frequently does not re-read. Multi-step problems

A student who computes flawlessly and cannot say what the question wants has a translation problem. They need different work.
